# Introduction

> One API key for structured JSON from about 250 websites, as a REST API or an MCP server for AI agents.

Perceptlayer turns public web pages into structured JSON. You call one endpoint per kind of data, such as Google Maps places, Zillow properties or Indeed jobs, with one key, and you pay only for calls that return data.

## How it works

* **One key.** Send it in the `X-API-Key` header. It works for every source.
* **Plain JSON.** Successful calls return the data with no wrapper. Costs and limits travel in headers.
* **Failed calls are free.** Bad parameters, no data, rate limits and source outages all cost 0 credits.
* **Same rules everywhere.** The REST API, the playground and the MCP server share one balance and one rate limit.
